Why read this blog as a new fiction writer

Getting Started

Why do I consider myself a novice?

Although I’ve toyed with writing since childhood, I’ve only been writing in earnest for 3 years. It’s not my full-time job, I haven’t made any money from it and I don’t have a published novel. I know writers who have done some of the above and I know when it comes to their own writing career, would still consider themselves beginner to intermediate. Learning and practising this craft takes years.

Why spend your time reading my blog, if I don’t know anything?

Fair question. I’ve learnt my lessons by doing it and going through it, often painfully. I have attended a creative writing collage course, I do write marketing content for work and I’m a proud member of my local writing circle, where I hold a place on the committee.

I’ve read plenty of great and useful writing blogs, I’ve used hundreds of them but can find them repetitive, not always giving practical information and the writer has forgotten what it was like in the beginning.

I’ll be trying to highlight the aspects of fiction writing that aren’t as well covered as the main ideas and rules. That’s all out there, and I’ll share my favourite places to go for that with you too.

What makes me think I’m relevant?

Even this blog is new, to you and me. I’d thought about publishing one but that niggle of doubt got in the way, along with time and skill constraints. Then it came to me, as back in 2017 when I decided the write my first novel, to just get on with it. It’s only a blog, it won’t bite and I can’t get fired. I saw it as another fantastic learning opportunity within my beloved realm of writing.

So here it is. My fiction writing blog.

  1. Well as my beta reader there’s no-one knows where I’m at as well as you do candice. My first serious adult novel and it’s daunting. Every time I think I’ve got the first chapter right something pops into my head and I very thing needs changing around. There’s a constant upheaval in the story line and the character involvement. It’s fair to say that your support has been invaluable. This blog sounds fab and I want to be a part of it. 😊
